15 września 1878 roku trzech nastoletnich chłopców doglądało bydła w lesie niedaleko Silver Lake na Staten Island, kiedy natknęli się na drewnianą beczkę wystającą z błota. Podekscytowani perspektywą znalezienia skarbu, zaczęli gorączkowo rozkopywać ziemię wokół beczki za pomocą patyków.
