• Ep. 50 - The Restorative Power of Solitude
    Aug 4 2025

This is a very special milestone episode. It is the 50th episode. When this show started, I wasn’t sure we would make it a year, but here we are and we are ranked in the top 10% globally among 3.5 million podcasts. Thank you to each one of you for being a loyal listener. Today, we are talking about a common fear: being alone. Solitude is generally perceived as bad. People desperately seek to fill every minute of their lives with noise or other people. Yet, it is in solitude where we can become the most powerful versions of ourselves. Listen as Pat Owens, a Divorce Care facilitator for more than 20 years, shares how living alone and being comfortable in solitude pushes us to discover strengths we never knew we had.

A common fear people have when in the divorce process is, “Oh no, I’m going to be alone for the rest of my life.” This fear keeps people in bad marriages. We’d rather put up with a bad relationship than be alone. But, think about how much mental energy we spend each day just trying to keep the peace. What if we were free of that pressure and learned to become comfortable with solitude? Solitude can be profoundly restorative.

Listen as we discuss the top five consequences of not managing our loneliness and how you can begin to savor and flourish from time spent alone.

  • Ep. 48 - Are You Suffering From Retired Husband Syndrome?
    Jul 21 2025

Do you find yourself more anxious, stressed, perhaps becoming sick more frequently? There is a reason for that. It’s called Retired Husband Syndrome (RHS). Listen in as I share what RHS is and how you can manage not to lose your health and your sanity.

RHS is a real psychosomatic illness. It refers to a physical condition where wives experience stress, anxiety, or other health problems after their husbands retire and are home more often. This phenomenon is particularly observed in marriages with traditional gender roles, where the husband's retirement can disrupt the wife's established routines and sense of independence. It is the leading cause of divorce in Japan. In America, with the wave of Baby Boomers reaching 65, it has risen here as well. Divorce among those age 65 plus accounts for 1 in 4 divorces in the US today.

RHS manifests as various physical and psychological symptoms in the wife, including headaches, sleeplessness, depression, and increased feelings of stress, irritability, anxiety, even leading to ulcers.

  • Ep. 46 - When Silent Divorce Strikes
    Jul 7 2025

More couples are divorcing after age 50 than ever before. Yet, there is another phenomenon on the rise: the Silent Divorce. Many married people experience this phase for years before deciding to divorce. Some never divorce for financial reasons or they still have children in the home, or because they think this is the way it has to be when you are older. Listen in as I talk about the growing awareness of the Silent Divorce Phenomenon.

Silent Divorce is when a couple loses the profound emotional and physical connection to one another, yet they choose to stay together for financial or other reasons. Some signs:

    • There is a loss of physical intimacy. "We live as roommates" is commonly heard.

    • You sleep in separate bedrooms.

    • You no longer have shared activities.

    • You’re both in the same room staring at different screens.

    • There are fewer attempts to communicate what's happening or at all.

    • You've lost the plot to your marriage, meaning you've forgotten the story line or how your romance novel began.

If your divorce was the result of the trauma of abuse or betrayal, you probably spent decades in a state of confusion and disconnection. Listen as Stephanie Blyler shares her work at Connections That Heal, and how she gently guides women to reconnect with themselves, with God, and with others in a safe community. She helps women move from second-guessing and self-doubt to grounded awareness and quiet confidence in a life after #divorce. Stephanie discusses:

    • What an emotionally destructive marriage looks like.

    • How men use misassignment of responsibility to keep us stuck.

    • How 74% of women go to their pastors for help and they often enter a crisis of faith when faced with the prospect of divorce.

    • How women in traumatic relationships believe they need a man to take care of them, as they are not taught they are capable and believe the negative narrative coming from their destructive spouse. This prompts them to stay or seek a new relationship immediately post-divorce.

    • Three strategies for overcoming the post divorce triggers, discovering the truth and living confidently in our faith and belief in ourselves.
