Surfer Rosa is the debut studio album by the American alternative rock band Pixies, released in March 1988 on the British label 4AD.[5] It was produced by Steve Albini. Surfer Rosa contains many of the elements of Pixies' earlier output, including Spanish lyrics and references to Puerto Rico. It includes references to mutilation and voyeurism alongside experimental recording techniques and a distinctive drum sound.

As 4AD was an independent label, distribution in the United States was handled by British label Rough Trade Records; however, it failed to chart in either country. Only one single was released, a rerecorded version of "Gigantic", and reached number 93 on the UK Singles Chart. Surfer Rosa was rereleased in the US by Elektra Records in 1992, and in 2005 was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Surfer Rosa is often included on critics' lists of the best rock albums. Alternative rock artists including Billy Corgan and PJ Harvey have cited it as an inspiration; it was an influence on Nirvana's 1993 album In Utero, which Albini also produced.

  • "This is the number one song in heaven, Why are you hearing it now, you ask?" This week we are rerunning a Season 1 episode where we took a look at the synth pop group SPARKS, NO. 1 IN HEAVEN (1979) [new content recorded for intro!]
    Dec 9 2025

    Send us a text

Nº 1 in Heaven is the eighth studio album by American pop and rock duo Sparks. Recorded with Italian disco record producer Giorgio Moroder, the album marked a change of musical direction for the group and became influential on later synth-popbands.

Released on March 1, 1979 by Virgin Records (with initial copies on colored vinyl) and later licensed to Elektra Records in the US, Nº 1 in Heaven renewed interest in the band after disappointing sales of their preceding studio albums Big Beat (1976) and Introducing Sparks (1977). It is the band's only album on Elektra, the fourth label that the band was signed to in the US.

Come On Pilgrim is the debut mini-album by the American alternative rock band Pixies, released on September 28, 1987, on 4AD. Produced by Gary Smith, the release consists of eight tracks from a seventeen-song recording session that the band had recorded at Fort Apache Studios in March 1987.

Signing the band based on the quality of the recordings, 4AD founder Ivo Watts-Russellwhittled its track-listing down to eight songs, remixing them to become Come On Pilgrim. The remaining nine songs were subsequently released in 2002 as Pixies.

  • "People never read the airwaves, Do we only feed the airwaves, Or stamp them out at street level?" between seasons we look at an EP from THOMAS DOLBY, BLINDED BY SCIENCE (1983), which features the single versions of songs from THE GOLDEN AGE OF WIRELESS
    Nov 5 2025

    Send us a text

Blinded by Science is an EP by new wave/synthpop artist Thomas Dolby, comprising extended 12-inch single versions of songs from the 1982 album The Golden Age of Wireless. It was released in 1983.[2][3]

Four of the recordings had previously been released as two separate 12-inch remix singles in the UK: "She Blinded Me with Science" backed with "One of Our Submarines"; and "Windpower" backed with "Flying North". (These two singles were also released in 7-inch format, containing their shorter versions.) "Airwaves" is the full-length UK album version, since the US version of The Golden Age of Wirelesscontained the shorter UK single version.

The songs Up In Mississippi and Depot Street, and other Mudcrutch songs, can be found on the Playback boxset from 1995 on Disc 5: Through The Cracks & Disc 6: Nobody's Children. The B-Sides can be found on YouTube. Check out this YouTube playlist for all 4 songs we reviewed.

Mudcrutch was an American rock band from Gainesville, Florida, whose sound touched on southern rock and country rock. They were first active in the 1970s and reformed in 2007, and are best known for being the band which launched Tom Petty to fame.[1][2]

Mudcrutch formed in Gainesville in 1970 and soon became a popular act across Florida. The band moved to Los Angeles in 1974 to attract the attention of a record company. Though they signed a contract with Shelter Records, they released only one poor-selling single before breaking up in 1975. The following year, former Mudcrutch members Petty, Mike Campbell, and Benmont Tench formed the core of a new band, the Heartbreakers.

Fugazi, also known as the EP 7 Songs,[7] is the debut release by the American post-hardcore band Fugazi. As with subsequent release Margin Walker, Guy Picciotto did not contribute guitar to this record; all guitar was performed by Ian MacKaye. It was originally recorded in June 1988 and released in November 1988 on vinyl and again in 1989 on the compilation release 13 Songs along with the following EP Margin Walker. The photo used for the album cover was taken on June 30, 1988 at Maxwell's in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Ace Frehley is the first solo album by American guitarist and former Kiss member Ace Frehley, released on September 18, 1978, by Casablanca Records.[1] It was one of four albums released by each separate Kiss member as a solo act, but yet still under the Kiss label, coming out alongside Peter Criss, Paul Stanley, and Gene Simmons.

Ace Frehley contains the cover hit single "New York Groove", which was originally written by Russ Ballard and recorded by Hello in 1975. The song would prove to be a major hit for Frehley and boosted sales for its parent album. The album would also prove to be the most successful of the four Kiss solo albums.

Check out our review of the album proper here.

Spirit Phone is the seventh studio album by Lemon Demon, a musical project created by American musician Neil Cicierega. The album was released digitally through Bandcamp on February 29, 2016, marking his first full-length album in eight years. All tracks were written, performed, and recorded by Neil Cicierega.

The album's cover art was created by Cicierega's wife, comic book artist Ming Doyle. The song "Sweet Bod" features a guitar solo by Dave Kitsberg of Time Lord rock group Time Crash. The album received generally positive reception and was largely successful, with the track "Touch-Tone Telephone" once being Lemon Demon's most streamed track with over 80 million streams on Spotify. On July 10, 2018, independent label Needlejuice Records announced vinyl, CD, and cassette releases of Spirit Phone.
