Partendo dal genere del Singspiel (oramai, dopo Mozart e Beethoven, non più “minore”), oltralpe si va forgiando una drammaturgia musicale che accoglie boschi, demoni, magie, dannazione e redenzione. A dare a questo teatro musicale le sue ouverture ideali è, con i suoi capolavori, Carl Maria von Weber. La sua perfetta sintesi tra forma sinfonica e adesione emotiva al tema del dramma è un punto di riferimento non solo per i tedeschi: ne risente non poco anche il Verdi di Luisa Miller.
