Der sowjetische Großmeister Vassily Smyslov war zwar nur 1 Jahr lang Weltmeister (1957-1958), jedoch 8 Jahre lang Vize-Weltmeister und nahm fast 50 Jahre lang an den WM-Ausscheidungskämpfen teil. Noch mit über 60 bedurfte keines geringeren als Garry Kasparow, um Smyslov auf seinem Weg zum erneuten WM-Kampf zu stoppen.
