Der Niederländer Max Euwe errang den Titel des Schach-Weltmeisters 1935 durch seinen Sieg über Alexander Aljechin, verlor aber zwei Jahre später gegen denselben den WM-Rückkampf. 1970 übernahm er als bislang einziger Ex-Weltmeister das Amt des Präsidenten des Weltschachbundes FIDE.
