Der russisch-französische Schachmeister Alexander Aljechin war Weltmeister von 1927 bis 1935, verlor den Titel gegen Max Euwe, holte ihn sich aber im Revanchenkampf zwei Jahre später zurück. Am Brett einer der größten Spieler aller Zeiten, versagte er als Mensch in den Jahren 1941-1943, in denen er sich aus opportunistischen Gründen dem Nazi-Regime andiente.
