About this listen

The strong black woman, also called the black superwoman complex, is a strong, resilient, African-American woman, who strives for excellence in all areas of her life, not for the sake of excellence but in an effort to be seen as equal in a society that sees little value in her and believes she's undeserving of access to meaningful resources and success. The sacrifice for her super achievements is the denial of her own pain and needs.

Bridgette Arnett, MD, PhD. and Mawusi Arnett, MD, MPH discuss the origins, signs, and some of the adverse mental and physical health impacts of the black superwoman complex.

Learn:

  • The sometimes-overwhelming challenges of mothers training to achieve excellence and become physicians
  • Exercise as a cathartic release, reinvigoration, and treatment of mild-to-moderate depression
  • How a tribal mentality and the fight for resources led to a social structure designed to maintain a dominant patriarchy’s profit, power, and pleasure
