About this listen

In this first episode of Black Women in Policing, Marcia Ore interviews Karen Geddes who retired from West Midlands Police after 30 years of service in 2022 having reached the rank of Superintendent. Karen shares her lived experience as a Black Woman in Policing who was finally able to join after height restrictions were relaxed. Karen was awarded QPM and was the first Black female to reach the rank of Superintendent in West Midlands Police history.

As a result of the podcast series, Black Women in Policing , Marcia and Karen Geddes QPM started an organisation called Women In the Shade with a clear vision: to create an environment where the talents, unique experiences, and perspectives of Black women are not just acknowledged, but respected and valued. We refuse to accept the status quo where Black women in uniform services continue to face barriers and obstacles in their professional journeys.
