The story follows John Vansittart Smith, a British Egyptologist visiting the Louvre in Paris. While studying ancient papyri, he encounters a museum attendant with an unsettlingly Egyptian appearance—Sosra, whose skin is parchment-like and whose eyes glow with an unnatural green hue.
