Hello and welcome to REEL OBSCURE!This week I'm taking a look at John Carpenter's The Fog (to give it its full title), a ghastly ghost story featuring a horrific history that comes back to haunt the residents of a small coastal town. • EPISODE 16: ISLAND OF TERROR - Man vs Science Gone Wrong in this Classic Creature Feature!
    Jan 2 2026

Hello and welcome to REEL OBSCURE!

This week's movie features a tale of rogue science, bone-sucking monsters and Peter Cushing having a whale of a time.

1966's ''Island of Terror'' is something of a rarity, being only one of six or seven - STOP IT - movies from Planet Film Productions. But it's a surprisingly fun science horror movie with some great gory effects, fantastic performances and a wonderfully eerie alien atmosphere.

I also must apologize for my voice breaking in a few points during this recording. To avoid missing episode drops over the Holidays I had to record multiple tracks back-to-back and that, along with a cold, left my voice quite raw by the end. Hopefully it won't spoil your enjoyment too much!

  • EPISODE 15: BLOOD TRACKS - The Snowbound Swedish Slasher!
    Dec 31 2025

Hello and welcome to REEL OBSCURE!In a semi-festive episode, I take a look at BLOOD TRACKS, a Swedish slasher/survival horror movie set in the snowy mountains, where a glam rock band decide to shoot ONE SCENE for their latest music video - a decision they soon come to regret.

With drunken Swedes, lingerie-clad dancers braving the elements, unexplained mutants and a terrible title song, BLOOD TRACKS is the pinnacle (ha!) of good-bad movies.

  • EPISODE 14: PHANTASM - From Banned Video Nasty to Cult Legend
    Dec 19 2025

In this week's episode I take a look at Don Coscarelli's cult classic horror, Phantasm, a movie that features some of the most iconic images of the 70s, including Angus Scrimm's The Tall Man and the silver Spheres. A nightmarish horror that combines gore, scares and surrealism, Phantasm has an interesting genesis, which I take a look at along with, as ever, the usual cast and crew profiles and thematic discussions. As ever, you can learn more about REEL OBSCURE by visiting https://www.reelobscurepod.com

  • EPISODE 13: EQUINOX - What if Ray Harryhausen Had Made The Evil Dead?
    Dec 13 2025

Firstly, apologies for some of the sound issues with this episode. I think I ended-up being cursed by this movie, as the entire recording self-imploded and vanished as I was attempting to fix the minor sound problems and due to illness and the Holidays I wouldn't have had time to re-record the whole thing in time for this week's release. So sorry about that...Anyway, this week we're taking a look at EQUINOX, a movie featuring demonic possession, stop-motion monsters and legendary author Fritz Leiber! As ever, if you enjoy this episode then please LIKE, SHARE, COMMENT and SUBSCRIBE (and don't forget to TURN NOTIFICATIONS ON!)You can also learn more about REEL OBSCURE by visiting our website at https://www.reelobscurepod.com.

  • EPISODE 12: THE GRAPES OF DEATH - The French Body-Horror Masterpiece!
    Nov 21 2025

This week we take a look at 1978's The Grapes of Death, directed by Jean Rollin, a man whose name I mispronounce in about 6 different ways in this episode. Eschewing Rollin's usual vampire eroticism and surrealist storytelling, Les Raisins de la Mort (to give it its French title) is a grounded - but very visceral - ecological tale of madness, mutation and murder. You can learn more about REEL OBSCURE by visiting https://www.reelobscurepod.com
