St. Alphonsus indicates the true meaning of Christmas in his prayer for this holy day. Reflecting upon it reminds us of the most important graces we need. The Infant Jesus wishes to grant us great spiritual graces this season. Sadly, we don’t value His graces sufficiently, don’t dispose ourselves to receive them, or fail to ask for them. Let us call to mind the tears He shed for us. Consider how much He loves us – a truth manifested at Christmas more than nearly any other day – and thus strive to receive and return His love.

All the elect are called to cooperate with Our Lord in His work of the redemption of the world. Seriously take this to heart, because it is the purpose of your life. You are supposed to be cooperating with Our Lord in the salvation of the world, first your own salvation and then the salvation of those God places in your life. Our Lady has three distinct rights to the title Co-Redemptrix. In the same sense as the elect, but to a decree which no others approach, Mary cooperated in the salvation of all. Then, in a manner which no other creature could or did, Mary's maternal cooperation was indispensable to the redemption of the world. Furthermore, God willed for her dolors to form an integral part of Our Lord's Sacrifice. Excepting the abandonment of His Father, the sorrows in Our Lady’s heart were the most painful element in Our Lord’s passion. Thus, Mary's compassion increased Jesus's suffering, making it more powerful, holy, and pleasing to God.

Many prayers used by the Church at Holy Mass come from the Psalms. These reveal to us the heart of prayer and the Heart of Mary (e.g. today’s Offertory from Ps 30). Having true devotion to the Immaculate Heart means striving to model our heart after Mary’s. Seek to receive Holy Communion with her heart. Seek to pray with the dispositions of her heart. Seek to fulfill your daily duty with her mindset. Above all, accept trails and difficulties with the spirit of Our Lady.

Know five principles that help us understand Christ’s work of redemption, our own role in salvation, and the absolutely unique role of Our Lady as Co-redemptrix. Jesus is the sole Redeemer. Yet all the elect cooperate with Him in this work. We do this in a secondary dependent sense and by participation in Christ. The more holiness you acquire, the more you can help others. There is nothing greater you can do for someone than to cooperate in their salvation. Our Lady’s role is far greater than all the angels and saints combined and qualitatively different from how we “fill up those things that are wanting of the sufferings of Christ.” (Col 1:24).

To help you be more devoted to the image of the Immaculate and Sorrowful Heart of Mary, consider these three miraculous images. Our Lady of Montallegro in Ramalla Italy (1557) was brought by angels from Greece. Carmelite monks in Vilnius, Lithuania built a chapel to honor Our Lady at the Gate of the Dawn. And Mary promised a particular grace of devotion to all who venerated her image of Our Lady of Confidence, especially with the aspiration ‘My Mother, my confidence.” Our Lady will continue to work great miracles through those images which she chooses. After all, as St. John Eudes teaches, Jesus Himself teaches devotion to the Immaculate Heart of His most holy Mother.

Our Lord is the sole redeemer of the world. We are each called to cooperate in His Redemption. Mary participates in the redemption as we do, but to a much greater degree. Moreover, she then also cooperates uniquely in Christ's redemptive work via her divine maternity and her sorrows. It is by His passion and death that Christ saves us. Our Lady's compassion with Christ had the same character of sacrifice and expiation as Our Lord's passion. In fact, God willed that Our Lady's sorrows form an integral part of Christ's saving passion.

On account of their fidelity to Christ, good priests are being persecuted by those who wield ecclesial authority over them! This is happening throughout the entire Church. The canonical processes which are intended to uphold truth and justice have become blatantly corrupt. Some of the very worst pastors are being placed into high positions of power. It is imperative that we pray for the Church. Pray for the conversion of the hierarchy. And support your faithful priests! An extremely powerful prayer is the Rosary, but we must use it well. While the Rosary consists of both meditative and vocal prayer, it is the mental prayer which we so often neglect. As we pray, we are to contemplate the virtues and chief mysteries of the life, death, and glory of Jesus Christ and His most Holy Mother.
