Convicted killer and cartel hitman Gonzalo Lopez had nothing to lose when he escaped from a Texas Department of Criminal Justice transport bus near the small town of Centerville, Texas.
A three-week search for the inmate brought the town to a halt and the TDCJ under scrutiny.
The culmination of egregious security policy violations by TDCJ officers, a chaotic and confusing search and Lopez’s determination resulted in the murder of five people; a grandfather and his young grandsons. The horrific saga came to an end when Lopez was killed in a shoot out with law enforcement near San Antonio.
But when the search ended, questions started.
