 In a faraway land, Tom, a poor bootmaker, toiled tirelessly. His clever cat, Puss in Boots, devised a plan to make Tom rich. Borrowing Tom's boots, Puss presented the King with flowers, claiming they were from his master, the fictional "Count of Carabas." The next day, Puss tricked Tom into a lake and convinced the King that the "Count" needed new clothes after being robbed. The King, impressed, provided lavish attire and a horse. Puss then rode to an ogre's castle, challenging the ogre's shape-shifting abilities. Tricking the ogre into turning into a mouse, Puss ate him. When the King, Tom, and the squire arrived at the castle, Puss declared it the home of the "Count of Carabas." The King, delighted by the supposed Count's wealth and generosity, made Tom a knight. Tom and Puss, now wealthy and respected, moved into the castle, leaving their impoverished past behind, and lived happily ever after.
