After training in clinical medicine, he spent two decades at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) before joining the World Health Organization (WHO), where he held key roles, including Director of the Global Influenza Programme and Assistant Director-General for Health Security. His expertise spans a wide range of infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS, avian and pandemic influenza, SARS, MERS, and antimicrobial resistance. Following his tenure at WHO, he became the Director of the School of Public Health at the University of Hong Kong, furthering his contributions to global health.
