In September 2013, two friends, Dr. Jo Elliott-Blakeslee and Amy Linkert, set out for a short hike in Idaho’s Craters of the Moon National Monument and never returned. Their truck was found locked at the trailhead, their dogs alive inside, and their phones left behind.

In June 1986, a tanker truck crashed on Spain’s treacherous Somosierra Pass. Inside the wreckage, rescue crews found the bodies of a husband and wife burned by the spilled acid cargo. But their 10-year-old son, Juan Pedro, who had been traveling with them, was gone.
