About this listen
Week 6 of our Indie Movie Explosion series tracks the rise of the "New Jack" era and the ultimate cinematic comedown. We’re breaking down the high stakes hustle of New Jack City (1991), the cold-blooded neon-noir of King of New York (1990), and the stylistic masterpiece Requiem for a Dream (2000).
New Jack City (1991) The highest grossing indie of ’91. We look at how the real-life Chambers Brothers and the "Broadmoor" apartment inspired the CMB empire, Wesley Snipes’ transition from a Michael Jackson music video to Nino Brown, and why the Nation of Islam security guards wouldn’t let Judd Nelson on set.
King of New York (1990) Christopher Walken as the "vampiric" Frank White. We discuss how Wesley Snipes was living in his car during production, the "abomination" premiere that got the cast booed off stage, and the deal Abel Ferrara made with Donald Trump to film at the Plaza Hotel for free.
Requiem for a Dream (2000) The "horror movie" of addiction. We break down Darren Aronofsky’s "hip-hop montage" style featuring over 2,000 cuts, Ellen Burstyn’s grueling transformation into Sara Goldfarb, and why the word "heroin" is never actually spoken in the film.
Join us as we discuss the real life Detroit gang that inspired The Carter, Christopher Walken’s free hotel stay from Donald Trump, and the movie that Jared Leto starved himself to make.
