Dalla Germania dei Bach, il genere del concerto per strumento a tastiera e orchestra trova terreno fertile anche nell’Impero Austro-Ungarico. A Vienna musicisti quali Wagenseil – autore stranamente ignorato anche dalla discografia – e Schroeter adattano a questa forma i nuovi dettami di gusto dello “stile galante”, in termini analoghi e paralleli alle raccolte di concerti pubblicate negli anni ‘70 da Johann Christian Bach; ma è soprattutto Haydn che, nella sua produzione più matura, si affianca ai primi capolavori del giovane Mozart: i concerti per pianoforte e orchestra di Haydn restati in repertorio sono soprattutto tre, tra i quali spicca decisamente il Concerto in re maggiore.
