About this listen

What do Greek gods, video games, and film have in common? More than you’d think.

I’m Dr Dani Shalet, and in Myths, Games & Meaning I sit down with enthusiasts of every kind, scholars, performers, storytellers, and gamers, to explore how ancient myths are constantly reimagined for today’s audiences. From Medusa to Middle-earth, from the Hero’s Journey to Baldur’s Gate, we’ll dig into the stories that shape our culture, our games, and ourselves.

If you love myth, gaming, film, and finding fresh meaning in the stories we tell, you’ll feel right at home here.

Episodes are released bi-weekly.

  • Hamunaptra & Other Places We Probably Shouldn’t Explore: Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Apotheon & The Mummy
    Nov 30 2025

After a short hiatus, Dani returns to the mic, and she is joined by special guest and friend Nanci Santos for a journey into ancient adventures, fandom joy, and the surprising power of video games.

When Covid shut down everything, we didn’t stop exploring, we just changed our tools. Dani and Nanci dive into how games became a new way to connect with the ancient world through play, research, and storytelling.

From first gaming memories (Woody Woodpecker, anyone?) to discovering myths through Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Apotheon, we talk about what keeps drawing us toward ancient adventures — even the cursed ones. And of course, we celebrate our favourite unsung hero of The Mummy (1999), Evelyn Carnahan (because she is the real protagonist, and we’ll die on that hill 😌).

Join us for friendship, fandom, fieldwork detours, and folklore — as we explore why stories and ruins alike keep calling us back.

  • From Tombs to Tolkien: Myths, and Geekery with Earl Baylon (Part 2)
    Oct 20 2025

Hey everyone, welcome back to Myths, Games and Meaning. I usually release new episodes every seven to ten days, but this one took a little longer as I’ve been battling a chest infection and completely lost my voice for a while.

I’m so glad to be back though, because this is Part Two of my chat with the wonderful Earl Baylon: actor, geek and gamer, not to mention Jonah from Tomb Raider.

We go full nerd in this one: Lara Croft, Lord of the Rings, the Valar, archaeology, and Earl’s story about finally meeting Elijah Wood at Comic Con.

So grab a cuppa, get comfy, and join us for Part Two.

  • From Myth to Moria: A Geeky Gamer Chat with Earl Baylon (Part 1)
    Sep 29 2025

In this special two-part conversation, I sit down with my friend of ten years, actor and voice talent Earl Baylon (Jonah from Tomb Raider). In Part 1, we dive headfirst into our shared love of gaming, geek culture, and myth. From Return to Moria and Baldur’s Gate 3 romances, to Dragonlance nostalgia, D&D campaigns, and why fandom still makes us laugh, we celebrate the joy (and chaos) of being lifelong geeks.

This episode is raw, fun, and full of heart, more like a chat between two friends than a formal interview. If you’ve ever lost yourself in fantasy worlds, argued over Star Wars lore, or stayed up too late around a gaming table, you’ll feel right at home here.
