El 24 de mayo de 1964 se disputaba un partido clasificatorio para las olimpiadas de Tokio. A la selección de Perú le restaban dos partidos ante Chile y Brasil y no se podía dar el lujo de perder como local. Argentina ganaba 1 a 0, pero, a seis minutos para el pitazo final, Perú anotó el empate. Los más de 47 mil espectadores gritaron gol. Sin embargo, la alegría duraría poco.
