Il sublime, un’idea di genio già tutta illuminista, è oggetto privilegiato della sinfonia: lo scrive nel 1774 il teorico Abraham Peter Schulz, parlando di “splendore”. Il sublime, che il Settecento sa accostare con disinvoltura al semplice e persino al triviale (accanto ai grandi, faremo la conoscenza del fiammingo van Maldere), si esprime attraverso dei gesti sonori ben riconoscibili, dal solenne allo spaventoso: ma si affida soprattutto all’arte della fuga, che, da motore della composizione, è divenuta ormai un “vocabolo” che significa “dotto”, “elevato” e, appunto, “sublime”.
