Il medico Bernardino Ramazzini visitò "qualunque officina, anche la più umile" per rendersi conto, di persona, che le professioni più logoranti comportavano problemi per la salute e che il mantenimento di questo stato di cose era dovuto alle norme che la società si autoimponeva.
In altre parole, iniziò a guardare con occhi diversi i lavoratori e a comprendere che, per ciascuna situazione di fatica, di vessazione o di pericolo, esisteva non solo una cura, ma anche una possibile prevenzione.
Nasceva, nella seconda metà del Seicento, la medicina del lavoro.
