About this listen

Introduction

Summary of events: Jesus heads to Jerusalem as the prophesied Passover Lamb to make atonement on the cross for the sins of the world!

  1. Sat/Sun: He arrived in Bethany and stayed with Mary, Martha and Lazarus.
  2. Monday: He fulfilled prophecy by riding into Jerusalem on a colt with the multitudes declaring, "Hosanna, blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord, the Son of David." Then, he returned again to Bethany.
  3. Tuesday: He returned to Jerusalem and cleansed the temple and then, once again, returned to Bethany to spend the night with Mary, Martha and Lazarus.
  4. Wednesday: He curses the fig tree and then proceeded to the temple where He confronted the pride, self-righteousness, hypocrisy, rebellion and wickedness of Israel’s spiritual leadership by means of a series of parables. He is stopped by these religious leaders who ask Him a series of questions in their effort to discredit Him.
  5. Thurs-Sun: He will celebrate the Last Supper with the disciples on Thursday, be crucified on Friday and rise from the dead early Sunday morning!!

I The Question of Marriage

The Pharisees:

  1. They accepted both the OT scriptures and oral traditions as equally inspired.
  2. They believed in the resurrection of the dead (Acts 23:6).
  3. They believed in an afterlife, with appropriate reward and punishment on an individual basis.
  4. They believed in the existence of angels and demons (Acts 23:8).
  5. They were considered the people’s spiritual leaders.

Sadducees:

  1. They accepted the Pentateuch as divinely inspired, but not the oral traditions of the Rabbis.
  2. They denied any resurrection of the dead (Mt 22:23; Mk 12:8-27; Acts 23:8).
  3. They denied any afterlife, holding that the soul perished at death, and therefore denying any penalty or reward after the earthly life.
  4. They denied the existence of a spiritual world – angels or demons (Acts 23:8).
  5. They were highly unpopular because of their wealth, their legalistic doctrine and their political support of Rome.

Both groups deeply resented Jesus for a number of reasons:

  1. He contradicted their teachings and way of life
  2. He demonstrated miraculous powers they envied
  3. He was wildly popular and they were jealous
  4. He posed a direct threat to their power and influence
