About this listen

Making It Happen is the podcast made by Hockey Makers, for Hockey Makers celebrating the incredible volunteers who power field hockey events across the country. It is your behind-the-scenes pass to the Hockey Maker universe — a place powered by volunteers, positivity, and more tea than any one event should logically need.
We’re here to celebrate the brilliant humans who show up, muck in, and keep the tournaments buzzing. We’ll share real-life stories, funny moments, and explain all the roles you might step into — even the ones you didn’t know existed.

If you love hockey, community, and being part of something bigger, this podcast will show you just how rewarding volunteering can be.

Come for the stories, stay for the community… and maybe join the Hockey Maker family yourself. - Warning: listening may cause sudden urges to volunteer.

In Episode 2 Co-hosts Mark and Phil look ahead to the Super 6s Indoor Championships in Derby, just weeks away, as the Hockey Maker family prepares to reunite once again. Phil catches up with Neil and Vicki from England Hockey’s events team to talk about how Hockey Makers and the Event Assistant volunteers shape events, and the impact they have behind the scenes.

We also introduce a new half-time chat focusing on the value of volunteering — including why it’s worth shouting about on your CV — before heading back into the second half with a spotlight on Spectator Services, one of the biggest and most important functional areas. Plus, we look ahead to volunteering opportunities coming up in 2026.
