• The Lakers Are Winning More Games, But What Have We Really Learned About Their Postseason Potential?
    Apr 2 2024

Even as the Lakers are winning more games (7-3 over their last 10, 18-8 over their last 26), it's still a little tricky to figure out exactly what they are. How good are they? Are they more contender than pretender? What do you make of some of the big wins, like Milwaukee I and II, Minnesota, OKC, etc?

They're clearly much too good to be the genuinely mediocre/middish team they looked like they might be after the post-IST slump. Likely the Lakers finish 10-12 games over .500, which last year would have been enough for around a 4-seed in the West. Now? Likely ninth. But they're clearly not among the elite, either. Unless you're just thinking of results against the high end teams, in which case... they kind of are?

    So much to sort out.

One big Q: Do the Lakers themselves- players and coaching staff- feel like they know? And more importantly, do they agree on the answer?

Meanwhile, the Lakers are getting nothing from their bench. Two points on Sunday, and not much more than that on most nights. How important is that, especially as we get closer to the playoffs, and a theoretical return for Jarred Vanderbilt, as well?

Finally, LeBron's greatness creates hard questions for Rob Pelinka now, and down the road.

HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky, with Guest Aaron Larsuel!

SEGMENT 1: The Lakers are winning, but do we really know what they are?

SEGMENT 2: Is the bench really a problem?

SEGMENT 3: LeBron now, LeBron down the road...

  • Who will Start at Small Forward for the Los Angeles Lakers? Rui, Vanderbilt or Prince?
    Oct 5 2023

Because the Lakers are fairly set heading into the 2023-24 season - the primary members of the rotation are more or less set, there are no big controversies, no huge position battles - fans are intensely curious about the one big thing that isn't yet settled:

Who's gonna start at small forward?

Darvin Ham, not surprisingly, hasn't yet committed to answering that question - they haven't even had three practices or played a preseason game - but different players are getting a chance to audition for that spot. Jarred Vanderbilt, Taurean Prince and Rui Hachimura will all get reps with the named starters (Russell, Reaves, James, Davis). Ham's decision will probably be less about who "wins", and rather which player makes the most sense with that group, and how the choice impacts the rest of the rotation. Which combinations in the second unit would make the most sense? Well, you can't always put those together as easily if one of those dudes is a starter.

The good news? Nobody in that crew is going to complain if they're not in the opening five. Hachimura has already made it clear he's much more concerned about finishing games than starting them.

Other things to watch: Anthony Davis.

His jumper has been receiving a fair amount of attention, with Reaves praising it on one of the many, many podcasts on which he's appeared. The perception is that Davis's outside game has fallen off over the last couple of seasons... but is that really the case? 3-point shooting, for sure, but is that the only thing that matters? Does it really matter anymore if Davis stretches a defense all the way past the arc? It seems like he's a lot less interested in that part of his game, based on shot attempts over the last few seasons.

Finally, Denver head coach Michael Malone said Wednesday that he's not paying attention to the Lakers, and hasn't heard what players have been saying about having a little extra interest and motivation to play his Nuggets following all the post-playoffs chatter this summer. From Denver. Mostly from Malone.

He was very complimentary towards the Lakers... but is he really being serious?

Just another reminder, whether talking about the Lakers or other teams, never ever expect the things they say to motivate their team, frame the challenge or anything similar to actually reflect reality. That's not how this works.

    HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky

SEGMENT 1: Who is going to start at small forward?

SEGMENT 2: What are the tradeoffs Ham is balancing?

SEGMENT 3: AD's jumper and Mike Malone's amnesia.

  • How Does Jarred Vanderbilt's Injury Change the Lakers' Rotation, and Plans at the Trade Deadline?
    Feb 5 2024
It's a very, very busy week in the NBA with the trade deadline coming up on the 8th. And, of course, that means the Lakers tied to any available player on the market, because that's how this works. But while before the chatter was built mostly around Atlanta guard Dejounte Murray, the Lakers now have to fill a massive hole left by the injury to Jarred Vanderbilt. The Lakers now have a gaping hole to fill, in addition to any improvements they want to make in the backcourt, or anywhere else. And the stuff they have available doesn't change. It's one pick, it's D'Angelo Russell, it's (maybe) Rui Hachimura and an injured Gabe Vincent, plus whatever appeal guys like Max Christie and Jalen Hood-Schifino might have.So which holes do they try to fill? Do they keep more assets for this summer, roll the dice on this year and hope for the best? It's not an easy time to be Rob Pelinka.Meanwhile, one of the guys on the list of potential trade assets—Christie—was also one of their most impactful players in Saturday's win over the Knicks. Will Darvin Ham continue leaning heavily into the youngster for his defensive versatility (as well as some outside shooting) with Vanderbilt and Cam Reddish unavailable? Does the (new again) starting lineup mean that Rui Hachimura finally gets the PT Lakers fans have been clamoring for?Saturday it made sense to play Taurean Prince... but that's not going to be the case every game. Finally, what exactly was LeBron talking about with the hourglass emoji last week? And has he made any decisions around his player option for next year? The answer to the latter is no, and the former is "I'm not telling." Or so it was ahead of the game Saturday night. So anything to read into either?HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers have a major hole to fill with Jarred Vanderbilt on the shelf.SEGMENT 2: How should the Lakers try to address their shortcomings at the deadline. How do they prioritize?SEGMENT 3: LeBron says a lot by saying very little.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!NissanOur friends at Nissan have a lineup of SUV’s with the capabilities to take your adventure to the next level. • Lakers Beat Hornets 124-118, Finish Road Trip 4-2. Plus, Jarred Vanderbilt Injury Update!
    Feb 6 2024
It wasn't more than a week ago that things looked desperate for the Lakers. They lost in back-to-back blowouts, and their star players looked very, very shaky from a health standpoint. Then they won in Boston, without LeBron James, Anthony Davis and (in the second half) Jarred Vanderbilt. Then they won in New York. And then Monday, they finished off the trip with a victory over the 10-win Hornets in Charlotte. Final score, 124-118.And while the game got a little closer than the Lakers would have preferred in the fourth, the Lakers controlled it throughout, led by Anthony Davis. His scoring and rebounding has been there all year, but as of late AD's passing has also become a really big thing for the Lakers. Monday, he finished with a triple double -- 26 points, 15 rebounds, 11 assists, plus three blocks, on 12-16 shooting. He certainly wasn't the only contributor. D'Angelo Russell led the Lakers with 28 points. Austin Reaves pitched in with 11 dimes of his own. LeBron had 26 points. The Lakers (27-25) are now two games over .500 for the first time since beating the Hornets on December 28.And meanwhile, could the extent of the injury to Jarred Vanderbilt's foot be a little less than feared?HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers beat the Hornets, finish the trip 4-2.SEGMENT 2: Russell makes a closing argument?SEGMENT 3: Did Boston change the season? • Without Anthony Davis, the Lakers Lose Big vs. Hawks. And did Christian Wood Subtweet Darvin Ham?
    Jan 31 2024
The Lakers were walloped in Houston Monday, and had to turn around Tuesday to play the Hawks in Atlanta. This time, though, they'd take the floor without Anthony Davis, who had to miss the game after aggravating his hip/groin injury. It didn't go well. The Lakers were dominated by the Hawks, 138-122, a score that doesn't really capture how Atlanta controlled the game after the first seven minutes or so of the game. D'Angelo Russell played his worst game in a while -- bad timing considering he was up against Dejounte Murray, the Hawks guard rumored to be the apple of LA's eye in a trade that would send D'Lo... anywhere, really. Taurean Prince was... oof. Austin Reaves struggled to carry the load offensively while also checking Trae Young.Save Jarred Vanderbilt (on offense at least) and Rui Hachimura, there wasn't much to cling to, here. You even had Christian Wood possibly subtweeting Darvin Ham when he learned he wasn't starting. Wood denied it after the game... but I don't believe people are going to believe him.LeBron James summed things up well after the game. The Lakers are capable of beating any team in the league on any night. They're also capable of getting their asses kicked by any team, on any night. And now, are we back to Darvin Watch? After a brief uptick in performance, the Lakers are again regressing hard. • Without LeBron and Anthony Davis, Lakers Upset Celtics in Boston 114-105, led by Reaves, Russell.
    Feb 2 2024
According to our friends at FanDuel, the Lakers were double digit underdogs for Thursday's game in Boston, and that was BEFORE the news broke that Anthony Davis and LeBron James would both be out with injuries. That bumped the line up over 15.Whatever! The Lakers shocked the world, taking an early lead over the Celtics and never giving it up, winning 114-105 in a game that, for a night at least, changed the vibes around the team in a very positive way. Austin Reaves scored 32 points, and hit seven of his 10 3-pointers. D'Angelo Russell was only 5-20 from the floor, but 4-8 from downtown and contributed 14 assists and two steals. Jaxson Hayes had 16 points, 10 rebounds and (no, this is not a typo) zero fouls. None. In 34 minutes of burn.Everyone who played contributed, as it had to be for the Lakers to pull the upset. Was it a little goofy statistically? Sure was! The Lakers shot 40 percent overall... and over 52% from 3. (Just to note one example.) But whatever. They were seriously undermanned, especially after Jarred Vanderbilt left just before the end of the first half with a foot injury. His status going forward is yet to be determined. So the Lakers still have problems, no question. • Report: Jarred Vanderbilt Out Several Weeks (At Least) With Foot Injury. What Now for the Lakers?
    Feb 2 2024

On Thursday, the Lakers went into Boston without the services of Anthony Davis and LeBron James, and managed to come out with a fairly shocking win. Part of the underdog story, though, was the absence in the second half of forward Jarred Vanderbilt, who left the game late in the second quarter with an injury to his right foot.

News on the injury following the game was light. Negative x-rays (which frankly doesn't mean much, except nothing was broken), but not much else.

Friday, the news came, and it's not good. Vanderbilt will miss at several weeks at least, and possibly more as the team explores the full nature of the injury. It's a massive blow to a Lakers squad that has struggled all season to find defensive combinations that work, and particularly to replicate the skill set Vanderbilt brings. And he had just started to play his best basketball over the last couple of weeks.

Now, the Lakers have to figure out what to do going forward, especially with Cam Reddish, who played a modified Vanderbilt role earlier in the year when Vando was hurt, also on the shelf. How could this impact the rotation? LA's decision making process at the trade deadline?

There is much to discuss, and not much of it is happy.

  • The Lakers, Sparked by Huge Fourth Quarter and Anthony Davis' Defense, Beat Knicks 113-105.
    Feb 4 2024
Thursday in Boston, the Lakers shocked the NBA world, beating the Celtics without LeBron James or Anthony Davis, and with Jarred Vanderbilt missing the second half with a foot injury.Saturday in New York, they had Davis and LeBron back (Vando will miss weeks, at least), facing a Knicks squad down Julius Randle and OG Onunoby, but nonetheless on a nine game win streak. It was a grind and it wasn't necessarily easy, but the Lakers played with the same level of defensive intensity and held New York to only 17 points in the fourth quarter, and pulled away to win TK-TK. In only one quarter did the Lakers surrender more than 27 points. In today's NBA, that's quality work.Darvin Ham, changed things up again in the lineup, starting Rui Hachimura to play large. Still, Taurean Prince played a ton of minutes in this one, related to where he slots defensively (and a solid 16 points on 6-10 from the floor). He was a contributor, as were LeBron (24/5/5/2/1), Austin Reaves (22 points, seven dimes, one TO) and and Max Christie (only six points, but played huge minutes defensively down the stretch). But it was Davis, who finished with only 12 points, that really led LA's effort. His defensive presence was incredible, not just on the glass (18 rebounds) but also at the rim (four blocks). With a win Monday in Charlotte, the Lakers can finish a road trip in a strong way after what was unquestionably a disastrous start.HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!NissanOur friends at Nissan have a lineup of SUV’s with the capabilities to take your adventure to the next level.
