Non è solo il film che ha proiettato Steven Spielberg nell'empireo hollywoodiano, non è solo la pellicola che ha fatto scoprire agli americani che la stagione estiva poteva essere un grande momento per fare incassi d'oro, non è solo il primo prodotto cinematografico che ha introdotto l'idea e la pratica del franchise (che si sarebbe raffinata fino all'estenuazione e che lo stesso Spielberg avrebbe in un certo senso subìto), non è il film che ha usato effetti speciali molto avanzati per l'epoca (di cui il regista era in realtà piuttosto scontento): Lo squalo è molto di più perché affonda le radici in qualcosa che ha a che fare, come spesso capita e soprattutto al cinema, con il nostro inconscio.
