"In reifer Meisterschaft schuf Puccini für seine Schwalbe eine punktgenaue Partitur, kompositorisch eine seiner besten – verdichtet konzis, selbstironisch sein Lebenswerk zitierend, melodienzaubernd und klangfarbenrauschend wie eh und je, Figurentypen und –Konstellationen (La Bohème lässt des Öfteren grüßen) aufgreifend und befragend, und dann doch entschieden hinter sich lassend.
Die Rezeption der Rondine als süßliches Operettenleichtgewicht verstellte lange den Blick darauf, dass der späte Puccini hier mitten im Ersten Weltkrieg ein meisterliches Opus ersonnen hat, das zwar schwer zu realisieren ist, es aber wert ist, entdeckt zu werden."
