    Riepilogo:
    Il secondo volume delle avventure del ladro gentiluomo (1908) coglie l'opportunità di una benevola satira del grande Sherlock Holmes (il cui nome viene cambiato per ovvi motivi legali) per tratteggiare meglio il carattere di Arsenio Lupin: un ribelle della società di cui apprezza i lussi senza essere schiavo delle sue convenzioni, ma, si direbbe oggi, schiavo a sua volta dell'adrenalina. Anche l'essere inseguito da un nemico formidabile gli è congeniale, nella misura in cui viene inebriato dal pericolo. Beffardo, surreale, sopra le righe sempre, il personaggio di Lupin non è esente dal voler rappresentare la superiorità della sentimentale e romantica Francia rispetto alla triste e razionale Inghilterra.
