Il volume nasce dagli atti di un convegno tenutosi a Nonantola nel 2019. A Nonantola risiede Villa Emma, luogo in cui a partire dal 1943 vennero trasferiti dei giovani ebrei e stranieri, con lo status di rifugiati. Grazie al lavoro del studioso tedesco Klaus Vogt abbiamo diverse documenti che ci testimoniano l'importanza dei libri per quesi ragazzi: da un lato come strumento di studio, per dare la speranza di un futuro, e dall'altro come via di fuga per la mente, per distrarsi dall'angoscia della guerra.
