Lewis and Clark entered Idaho during their historic journey of discovery when they crossed what is now called Lemhi Pass. Their hope was to find a water route to the Pacific Ocean. When they found that there was no way they could tackle the treacherous waters of the River of No Return, they headed over what is now Lost Trail Pass.
