Believed to have been built in the early 1500s by the O’Bannon clan—secondary chieftains under the brutal rule of the O’Carroll clan—the current structure is thought to stand atop an even earlier castle. Long before stone walls were raised, the site was used by Druids for dark initiation ceremonies.
