Algérie, août 1950. Une roulotte tirée par un vieux cheval s'arrête sur un promontoire dominant la mer. A l'intérieur, un ourson. La nuit tombée arrivent deux jeunes bohémiens. C'est leur roulotte. Ils ont fui des villageois furieux qui les accusaient de vol et d'incendie et ont été séparés de leurs parents. Dans la nuit ils aperçoivent sur un rocher dans la mer une jeune fille qui ressemble à une sirène.
