Alle origini del concerto pianistico troviamo la grande figura di J.S. Bach, anche se certamente già coadiuvato dai suoi due figli maggiori Wilhelm Friedmann e Carl Philip Emanuel. In realtà questi concerti destinati al clavicembalo, ma entrati anche nel repertorio del moderno pianoforte, nascono come trascrizioni di altre precedenti composizioni per venire incontro alla pressante richiesta di musica di una società di musicofili di Lipsia, il Collegium Musicum. Anche i concerti “per organo o clavicembalo” di Haendel nascono come trascrizioni e adattamenti, anche se non sono mai entrati nel repertorio del pianoforte.
