Dans la seconde moitié du 17e siècle, la famille Morand s'échine à faire prospérer la ferme des Colombines. Le père a rencontré d'Artagnan. Le fils côtoiera Vauban.
Il vivra les batailles contre les Savoyards et sera témoin des persécutions contre les huguenots. Devenu gabelou, c'est à dire douanier de l'impôt sur le sel, il constatera qu'il n'y récolte que l'opprobre des villageois.
Il décidera alors de changer de vie. Mais on n'échappe pas toujours à son destin…
