Igual que muchos países de la regio Panama se independizó de Espana en 1821, pero motivados por el ideal de Simon Bolivar se unen voluntariamente a lo que en aquel entonces se conoció como la Gran Colombia, una coalición de países que eventualmente se desintegra, dejando a Panama en manos de Bogota.
