 El conde Keyserling le escribió a Bach en cierta ocasión: "Estimado señor Bach, quisiera encargarle algunas piezas de teclado, que deberán ser de tal suavidad y de algún modo vivaces que me animen un poco durante mis noches sin dormir, para que mi clavecinista, Goldberg, a quien vd. bien conoce, las toque en la antecámara de mis aposentos mientras me vence el sueño".
