Una reforma de la Seguridad Social en Nicaragua desencadenó una serie de protestas muy similares a la revolución sandinista de 1978, que llevó al país a la usurpación del poder y cese de la dictadura. No obstante, al actual presidente de Nicaragua se le ha caído la máscara social-demócrata: la represión de la policía en las calles ha sido propia de una dictadura de izquierdas al estilo Venezuela. Las protestas han dejado un rastro de civiles, periodistas y policías muertos; han llevado a 23.000 nicaragüenses al exilio. La censura, el cierre de periódicos, la tortura y los presos políticos son otros fenómenos que hay que mostrar.
