"La poesía, como todo lo importante en la vida, es difícil de definir. Sería este trabajo inacabable si tratásemos de apuntar las características ciertas o falsas que, desde el fondo de nuestra historia conocida, se han dado a la poesía. Hoy sabemos que los egipcios, los sumerios y los chinos -por citar pocos ejemplos del pasado remoto- hacían poesía y le daban la mayor importancia. En la India milenaria, los textos mágicos y religiosos más antiguos están originalmente escritos en poemas, como el Mahabharata, que comprende en su mismo centro el inmortal Bhagavad Gita y el Uttara Gita.
