Quello della nuova classicità è un concetto essenziale dell’estetica musicale di Busoni negli anni della maturità. Così ne scrive lui stesso: “Per nuova classicità intendo il dominio, il vaglio e lo sfruttamento di tutte le conquiste di esperienze precedenti, e il racchiuderle in forme solide e belle”. Lavori che incarnano questa idea, oltre al ciclo pianistico delle Sonatine (opere tutt’altro che semplici e disimpegnate, a dispetto del titolo) sono i due piccoli capolavori teatrali, Arlecchino e Turandot, di concezione solo apparentemente scherzosa e dimessa, in realtà proiezioni diverse e complementari della stessa personalità dell’autore.
