Après la mort d’Antiope, Thésée épouse Phèdre. Avec Pirithoos, il tente de descendre aux Enfers pour enlever Perséphone. Hadès les piège : ils restent prisonniers, et seul Héraclès parvient plus tard à libérer Thésée. De retour à Athènes, rejeté, il part sur l’île de Skyros, où il est trahi et poussé d’une falaise par le roi. Bien après sa mort, ses restes sont ramenés à Athènes, où il est honoré comme un héros fondateur.
