Il nuovo ambiente, polifonico, della musica celeste, si rapprende tutto intoro a quella parola, “armonia”, che Uguccione da Pisa—la massima autorità lessicografica seguita da Dante—nelle Magne Devirationes definiva come “dulcoratio et consonantia plurimorum cantuum.” Si fa riferimento alla tecnica contrappuntistica del cantus firmus, su cui le altre voci organali (qui una sola) si muovono in alto e in basso. Dante aveva certamente sentito questo tipo di canto nelle funzioni religiose delle chiese toscane.
