 La sera del 7 novembre 1918, sventolando una bandiera bianca, una delegazione tedesca guidata dal politico cattolico Matthias Erzberger si avvicina a un avamposto francese nei pressi del paesino di La Capelle; dopo un breve colloquio con il capitano Lhuillier, che comanda il battaglione responsabile del settore, la delegazione tedesca attraversa la linea del fronte, sotto gli sguardi incuriositi dei fanti francesi. Viene poi caricata su treno: destinazione Rethondes, una località nella foresta di Compiègne. E' in una radura umida e isolata che, alle 5,10 di mattina dell'11 novembre, viene firmato l'armistizio. Entrerà in vigore alle 11 del mattino. Le ore 11 dell’11° giorno dell11° mese dell’anno. Il momento esatto in cui finisce la Prima guerra mondiale.
