Who is Barry Adkins? Why should his story matter to you; to me?

In 2007, my 18-year-old son Kevin died of alcohol poisoning—the very day he moved out on his own. In the wake of that loss, I packed his ashes in my backpack and walked from Gilbert, Arizona to Kalispell, Montana. Since then, I’ve told his story nearly 400 times to over 400,000 students and parents. It’s a message about more than just loss—it's about the power of choices, resilience in the face of adversity, and the healing that comes through forgiveness.

Who is Dr. Sheila A. Otieno?

Sheila Otieno is an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies and Distinguished Emerging Scholar in Religious Studies at Elon University. She teaches religion and religious ethics, with a focus on African and African American religions.
