Morry Frenkel speaks with Dr Alon Loeffler, Postdoctoral Scientist at Cortical Labs in Melbourne, about the research being conducted there. Alon describes earlier published studies demonstrating that human brain cells - derived from stem cells - integrated into a digital environment were able to receive signals and send responses, and within minutes learn to play the computer game, Pong (a paddle and ball game). The so-called human-computer hybrid is being taught to ‘read’ handwriting and play Doom, a more sophisticated computer game. Alon also describes how the hybrid has been used to compare the efficacy of anti-epileptic drugs. Referred to as synthetic biological intelligence, the system has been incorporated into a commercially available device. Melanie talks about the history and goals of the organisation, and explains what motivated her to join this grassroots Christian community that welcomes everyone who wants to see the elimination of antisemitism here. She then provides details of the forthcoming Australia-wide Australians Against Antisemitism National Day, which will be held on Sunday October 26th, and stresses the importance of Jewish and non-Jewish communities showing solidarity through large numbers attending rallies being held in all capital cities and additional sites in Queensland. Malka Lawrence speaks with Elana Benjamin, is a Jewish-Australian writer of Indian-Iraqi heritage. Her new cookbook, Indian-Jewish Food: Recipes and Stories from the Backstreets of Bondi, weaves food, with memories of family, community, Jewish traditions, and spices. In its pages, she captures the recipes and stories of Sydney’s Baghdadi Jewish community, who settled in Bondi during the 1950s and 60s. The book is published by the Sydney Jewish Museum, is now available. Elana is a co-founder of Sephardi Mizrahi Voices Australia, an organisation which seeks to raise awareness of the traditions, culture and history of Jews from Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North African and Iran.

Morry Frenkel speaks with Cr Will Nemesh, Mayor of Waverley, and an attendee at the first Australian Mayors Summit Against Antisemitism, about the council’s action plan to combat local antisemitism. Will talks about Waverley being the first council in Australia to adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism and the establishment of a comprehensive plan that can serve as a model for other councils. This includes providing grants promoting social cohesion, fostering public education and raising awareness, putting in place programs to support intercultural and interfaith understanding, and focusing on local issues to the exclusion of international affairs.
