  • Journeys of Faith's Austin New Book pt.1
    Sep 10 2024

In the latest episode of the Journeys of Faith podcast, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Freemason and author Austin Shifrin to dive deep into the symbolism, rituals, and evolving landscape of Freemasonry.

Austin recently published a new book titled "Black Ink and Farther Stars" which is a collection of five thought-provoking presentations he has delivered over the past couple of years. From exploring the historical use of ritual and performance in conveying moral lessons to delving into the profound symbolism of the Chamber of Reflection, Austin provided us with a fascinating glimpse into the multifaceted nature of Freemasonry.

One of the key themes that emerged was the importance of immersive experiences in Freemasonry. As one of our co-hosts shared, the detailed and visceral nature of certain Masonic ceremonies can have a profound impact, renewing one's faith in the fraternity. Austin echoed this sentiment, noting how the timing and logistics of progressing through the degrees can shape a member's initial perceptions and sense of belonging.

The conversation also touched on the challenges and changes facing Freemasonry, both globally and within specific jurisdictions. We discussed the resistance to innovation, the impact of mortality on lodge demographics, and the philosophical questions arising around the potential inclusion of women in traditionally male-only lodges. Austin provided valuable insights into the diverse manifestations of Freemasonry, from more cerebral and ritual-focused lodges to those with a stronger social emphasis.

Additionally, Austin shared his experiences with lesser-known Masonic bodies, such as the Allied Masonic Degrees and the Grand College of Rites, which work to preserve and research obscure side degrees. This symbiotic relationship between these organizations highlights the rich tapestry of Freemasonry and the dedication of its members to safeguarding its traditions and wisdom.

Throughout the discussion, it became clear that Freemasonry is a multifaceted and ever-evolving institution, one that continues to captivate and inspire those who seek deeper meaning, fellowship, and personal growth. We are grateful to Austin for sharing his insights and look forward to continuing our exploration of this fascinating subject in future episodes.

Stay tuned for part two of our conversation with Austin Shifrin, where we delve into the remaining chapters of his book and uncover even more intriguing aspects of the Masonic experience.

  • The Power of Faith, Rituals, and Personal Growth with Austin Shifrin
    May 14 2023

Welcome back to Journeys of Faith! In this episode,

we're excited to have Austin from Pennsylvania join us as we catch up on life in the last year and a half. Austin, a Freemason and a person of the Jewish faith, shares his journey from studying psychology to pursuing a master's in public policy and management, and finally to his 17-year career in banking and finance where he wore many hats. Listen in as we explore Austin's insights on spirituality and philosophy, as well as his recent book.

Throughout our conversation, we discuss the changing perspective of religious education as we age and the importance of having a background in something we can return to. We examine the role of faith in our lives and the reluctance to represent any one particular faith. We also take a look back at the history of England and how Jews were treated there. Additionally, we explore the idea of a divine power that transcends the differences between religions, and the notion of a Theosophists school of thought that may provide a deeper understanding of the relationship between religions.

As we continue to discuss Freemasonry and its many facets, we reflect on the need for Freemasonry to have a greater presence in the UK, and how this can be achieved through modernising its web presence and publicizing its charitable giving. We also emphasise the importance of taking risks and putting yourself out there, as well as the value of having people around us who are supportive, even if they disagree with us.

Join us for an enlightening and engaging conversation with Austin that you won't want to miss!
