Austin recently published a new book titled "Black Ink and Farther Stars" which is a collection of five thought-provoking presentations he has delivered over the past couple of years. From exploring the historical use of ritual and performance in conveying moral lessons to delving into the profound symbolism of the Chamber of Reflection, Austin provided us with a fascinating glimpse into the multifaceted nature of Freemasonry.

One of the key themes that emerged was the importance of immersive experiences in Freemasonry. As one of our co-hosts shared, the detailed and visceral nature of certain Masonic ceremonies can have a profound impact, renewing one's faith in the fraternity. Austin echoed this sentiment, noting how the timing and logistics of progressing through the degrees can shape a member's initial perceptions and sense of belonging.

Austin, a Freemason and a person of the Jewish faith, shares his journey from studying psychology to pursuing a master's in public policy and management, and finally to his 17-year career in banking and finance where he wore many hats. Throughout our conversation, we discuss the changing perspective of religious education as we age and the importance of having a background in something we can return to.
