About this listen

Welcome to The Kids Were Alright: A Women's Football History. Each week we will spotlight the pioneers and analyse the events that made women's football what it is today. You'll hear from inspiring who made history in the game and from expert historians to give context to those events. In this episode, Laura Howard speaks to Joanie Evans about her experiences as co-founder of the first out-lesbian football team in Europe, Hackney WFC. Evans reflects on experiences of homophobia, the community she found in at Hackney WFC and appearing on Channel 4 documentary 'Running Gay'. Laura also speaks to Carla Lydholm Hills to learn more about social attitudes toward the LGBTQ+ community at the time and how women's football became an inclusive space for the community.
