Die Demokratie in Japan war lange immun gegen den Rechtspopulismus, wie er sich in den USA und Europa ausbreitet. Das änderte sich bei der Teilparlamentswahl im Juli, als die Sanseito, die „Politische-Teilhabe-Partei“, die höchsten Zugewinne erreichte. In der Folge kam es auch in der Regierung zu einem Rechtsruck. Der Wahlkampfslogan „Japaner zuerst“ hatte am Erfolg der Partei großen Anteil. Sie ist erst einige Jahre alt, sieht sich als Kopie der MAGA-Bewegung von Donald Trump bzw. lässt sich auch mit AfD, Rassemblement National und Reform UK vergleichen.
