Compositrice più prolifica di tutto il Seicento, suor Isabella Leonarda ha pubblicato non meno di venti collezioni di musica sacra, che contengono quasi duecento composizioni in ogni genere del suo tempo. In più, ha lasciato l’unica collezione di musica strumentale scritta da un’italiana del Seicento: Sonate da uno a quattro strumenti. Nata in una famiglia aristocratica di Novara, Isabella entrò nel convento delle Vergini di Sant’Orsola a sedici anni, e vi rimase fino alla morte nel 1704, all’età di 84 anni. A oggi sono noti sedici volumi colmi di opere di grande bellezza e interesse musicale firmate dalla “Musa Novarese”, come la definì lo storico milanese Lazaro Cotta nel primo Settecento.
