About this listen
Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, was recently conferred upon eminent neonatologist Dr Armida Fernandez. Hailing from the beautiful town of Dharwad in Karnataka, Dr Fernandez completed her MBBS in Hubli and pursued her post-graduation at KEM Hospital, Mumbai. While working at Sion Hospital, the rampant incidents of infant deaths drove her towards relentless efforts and research to save them. Recognising the importance of breast milk, she established Asia’s first Human Milk Bank at Sion Hospital. Considered one of the pioneers of neonatology in India, she continues to work extensively for children and women, and also in the field of palliative care, at the age of 83.
Our Mumbai correspondent Ankita Apte spoke to the ever-young Dr Armida Fernandez about her illustrious journey, career, inspirations and more. Let us listen in.
