The International Teacher Podcast welcomes Nandini Shah—a self-described small-town girl from Gujarat who swapped arranged-marriage expectations for a globe-trotting teaching career. From Mumbai classrooms to snowy Russia, donkey-dotted Bulgaria, “the most boring city in Japan” (her words, not ours), and soon the Italian Riviera, Nandini shares her story of chasing adventure, fighting stereotypes about who gets to teach Shakespeare, and proving that spices, The Secret, and a stash of U.S. dollars are all you really need to survive abroad. Along the way, we get donkeys, Green Bay Packers jokes, and a reminder that international education isn’t just a career—it’s a stubbornly wonderful lifestyle.

  • Kent Retires From International Teaching
    Aug 23 2025

ITP - 128 This episode of the International Teacher Podcast was basically Kent “the Cat Guy” announcing his dramatic repatriation from Saudi Arabia to Washington State, where he’s now semi-retired, semi-confused, and fully rebranded as the “Cats Guy” (plural, because kittens). Between tales of neighbors who don’t want to party, doctors who look like they should still be in his fourth-grade class, and the realization that U.S. health insurance costs more than a small villa overseas, Kent admits reverse culture shock is real—though e-bikes, cat cafés, and traffic fingers keep things interesting. Meanwhile, Greg laments being abandoned, JP Mint sneaks in a plug for consulting season, and everyone agrees that international teachers need merch: t-shirts with pre-printed answers like “No, I didn’t live in a cave” and “Yes, we spoke English.” In short, Kent may have left expat life, but he’s still unpacking—both his luggage and his identity—one cat toy at a time.Greg's Nice Biking Interview (less than a minute) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3gLnOqSEjA&list=PLs1B3Wc0wm6DR_99OS5SyzvuzENc-bBdO&index=85 -- more --The International Teacher Podcast is a bi-weekly discussion with experts in international education. • Leadership and Onboarding - Dr. Liam Hammer in Zambia
    Aug 9 2025

Dr. Liam Hammer, Head of School in Zambia, joins us live from an orientation dinner. Liam shares his fascinating journey from a teenage dream of teaching in remote Papua New Guinea to leadership roles across five countries. The conversation explores the essential role of onboarding in teacher retention, the reality of navigating cultural norms, and the often-overlooked salary disparities in international schools—what Liam terms “passportism.” He also dives into his academic work, including publishing research on leadership, special needs, and equity in international education. With wit and humility, Liam discusses balancing multiple hats as a school leader, the evolving nature of international schools, and the powerful draw of teaching abroad. His candid insights, stories of immigration mishaps, and deep passion for educational equity make this episode both eye-opening and inspiring for aspiring and seasoned international educators alike.
